So, You're Going to Travel...Now What?
Whether you’re vacationing abroad or just flying to your hometown, traveling can sometimes be stressful, especially if you’re not used to it. That’s why I’ve put together some simple tips on how to survive your next trip, whether it’s domestically or internationally.
Pack your protein
No matter how short or long your flight, you're going to need some energy to make it through. Packing some protein will help you avoid that dreaded hangry feeling. Plus, it'll keep you fuller longer so you can resist the temptation of those unhealthy airplane snacks. Peanut butter packets, hard-boiled eggs and yogurt are all great options.
Sleep early
It's important to get a good night's sleep before your flight. Not only will you be more rested, but you'll also be less likely to get sick. If possible, try to get a window seat so you can sleep against the wall.
Get comfortable shoes
Seriously, the most important thing you can do for yourself when preparing to travel is to make sure your shoes are comfortable. I cannot stress this enough. You will be doing a lot of walking, and if your feet are not comfortable, you will be miserable. Blisters are the worst, so make sure to break in your shoes before you travel.
Choose your seat wisely
If you can, choose a seat near the front of the plane. Not only will you be one of the first people off the plane, but you'll also have a shorter walk to the terminal. If you're traveling with someone, try to get seats next to each other so you can at least talk during the flight. And if you're flying solo, window seats offer a great view and a chance to catch up on some sleep.
Pack snacks
No matter the length of your flight, always pack snacks. airports and airplane food can be expensive, and you never know when you'll get hungry. Plus, having snacks on hand will help keep your energy up during long days of travel. some of our favorite snacks include: almonds, dried fruit, and dark chocolate.
Bring a water bottle for the plane
One of the most important things you can do when traveling is to stay hydrated. And what better way to do that than to bring your own water bottle with you on the plane? Not only will you be doing your part for the environment, but you'll also save money on those overpriced airport drinks. Plus, having a water bottle will come in handy if the plane's air is dry and your skin starts feeling tight.
Bring chargers! (both for phone and laptop).
No matter where you're going or how long you'll be gone, you're going to want to have a way to charge your devices. And not just your phone- bring a charger for your laptop too, because you never know when you might need it. Plus, if you have an international flight, you'll definitely want to have a backup charger that can handle different voltages.
Anticipate problems before they happen
Before you even leave for your trip, do your research. Know the ins and outs of the airport you’re flying into and out of. Have a game plan for what you will do if your flight is delayed or cancelled. The more prepared you are, the less stressed you will be when (not if) something goes wrong.
Meditate before boarding.
If you're anything like me, the mere thought of travel makes your heart race and your palms sweat. One way is to meditate before boarding your flight. Sitting in a quiet space and focusing on your breath can help you feel more calm and collected. Trust me, it's worth a try!
Stretch out your legs
One of the best things you can do when flying is to get up and walk around as much as possible. Not only will this help you avoid DVT (deep vein thrombosis), but it’ll also help you stay sane. If you can’t walk around, try stretching your legs while seated. And if you’re really lucky, you might get an empty seat next to you where you can put your feet up.
