Searching for aliens: Why we haven't found them yet
Have we found any signs of life in the universe? As of yet, the answer is still no, but that hasn’t stopped us from trying! The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has come a long way since 1961, when astronomer Frank Drake created the Drake Equation to help estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations that might be out there. The equation looked at how many planets could sustain life and how likely it was that those planets could also develop intelligent life forms and then communicated with each other by transmitting radio signals into space.
What is SETI?
SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is the scientific search for intelligent life outside of Earth. This can be done in a number of ways, including looking for radio signals from space or scanning the night sky for strange objects. So far, SETI has not found any conclusive evidence of intelligent life beyond our planet.
One possibility is that extraterrestrial civilizations are simply too far away for us to detect.
How can you get involved?
There are a few ways you can get involved in the search for extraterrestrial life. One is by joining or donating to SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. SETI uses radio telescopes to listen for signals from space that might be sent by intelligent alien civilizations. You can also look for signs of alien life right here on Earth. Some scientists believe that there might be microbial life on Mars, and you can help look for it by participating in the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
What next?
Now that we know that the Chinese telescope didn't find any aliens, where do we go from here? The search for extraterrestrial life is ongoing, and there are many theories as to why we haven't found any aliens yet.
Where next?
The search for extraterrestrial life is one of the most exciting endeavours humankind has ever embarked on. For centuries, we have looked up at the stars and wondered if there is anyone out there. And while we haven't found any aliens yet, that doesn't mean they don't exist. There are a number of theories as to why we haven't found any aliens, and the search continues. Who knows what we'll find next?
